チャリティ・クラフトビール企画

コンセプト

名古屋のクラフトブルワリー「 Hyappa Brews 」と「 Tallboys Brewing 」が、地域のチャリティ支援のために特別なビールを醸造します。販売されるビール1杯につき100円が、地域の支援を必要とする子どもたちを支える団体へ寄付されます。

本企画について

本企画は、在日米国商工会議所（ACCJ）中部支部および名古屋国際学校（NIS）が主催する「第35回中部ウォーカソン」を支援する取り組みです。

名古屋市内の飲食店（ホテル、レストラン、バー、カフェ、居酒屋など）の皆様は、対象のビールを提供いただくことで本企画にご参加いただけます。

A Charity Craft Beer Initiative

The Concept

Two Nagoya craft breweries - Hyappa Brews and Tallboys Brewing - are producing special beers to support local charities. ¥100 from every beer sold will be donated to organizations serving children in need throughout the community.

The Connection

This initiative supports the 35th Annual Chubu Walkathon , organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) Chubu Chapter and Nagoya International School (NIS) .

Who Can Participate

Nagoya food & drink establishments are invited to participate, including hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, and izakayas .

Citizens (20 years of age and up) can contribute by choosing these special beers when visiting participating establishments.

2026年の役割：景品担当・英語MC

コンラン・ブライスは、中部ウォーカソンを長年にわたり熱心に支えてきたサポーターです！

いつから関わっているのかというと…指折り数えても足りないほど前から。もはや正確には分かりません。

長年にわたり ウォーカソン委員会の委員長 を務め、2011年のモリコロパークへの移転など、節目となる重要な年にも携わってきました。

イベント当日は、ステージ上で 英語MC として活躍するブライスの姿を必ず見かけるはずです。

そしてそれだけでは終わらず、 景品担当 としても活躍するなど、ひとりで何役もこなしています。

地域を支えるリーダー

ブライスは中部ウォーカソンで精力的に活動する一方で、H&Rコンサルタンツ株式会社の代表としてチームを率いています。同社はウォーカソンの立ち上げ当初から関わりのある企業であり、長年にわたり主要スポンサーとしてイベントを支え続けています。

それだけではありません！

ブライスは、子ども向け人気アクティビティ「スーパーボールすくい」の運営にも協力しています。

さらに当日は、ご家族もイベントにボランティアとして参加し、一緒に運営を手伝うなど、このファミリー向けの楽しいイベントを一緒に盛り上げています。

2026 Role: Prize Tanto and English Emcee

Bryce Conlan is a long-time, ardent supporter of the Chubu Walkathon!

He's been involved since...well, we've run out of fingers and toes... so we'll never know.

Bryce served as Walkathon Committee Panning Chair for a long stretch, spanning some milestone years including the big move to Moricoro Park back in 2011.

You'll always be able to find Bryce because he's usually on stage as one of the event's emcees . But one role just isn't enough for Bryce, so he usually does double duty as Prize Tanto as well.

A True Leader in the Community

Bryce is a fair dinkum emcee, but we've told him not to quit his day job.

You see, when he's not rolling up his sleeves for the Chubu Walkathon, Bryce leads his team as President of H&R Consultants K.K. , a company also deeply rooted in the Walkathon with connections to the event's founding and a perennial high-tier Walkathon Sponsor !

But it doesn't stop there!

Bryce even helps to organize one of the kids' activities - the ever-popular Super Ball Scoop !

You'll also find Bryce's family chipping in and lending a hand at the event as well, taking advantage of the awesome family-friendly event that it is.

And the winner is....!

Designer: Shin, NIS Gr. 9 student

In Shin's own words...

The inspiration for this design originates from the connection between the Walkathon and the place where the event is going to take place, Meijo Park .

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, I wanted to include the idea of many years passing by, showing the community coming together. I incorporated footprints to represent the steps taken by participants over the years. Footprints symbolize the journey and memories that participants mark during the event, and by resembling it to the form of "shachihoko", a symbol deeply linked to the area's cultural identity, it conveys the themes of movement and unity. Each footprint stands for one person; however, together the design forms a powerful image that aligns with the slogan, "Countless Steps, One Community".

Watching people actually wear these t-shirts will be inspiring. The way the footprints come together to create the shachihoko isn't just a design; it would reflect exactly what happens at the event: everyone coming together, step by step, side by side. Witnessing everyone walk through the park in these shirts won't just be looking at art on fabric. The whole community becomes a living version of the design. It’s something to feel proud of, to feel part of, and it’s exciting to know that the design captures the energy and unity behind this event.

デザインを応募してくれた名古屋国際学園の生徒の皆さん、ありがとうございました！どの作品も素晴らしく、選考はとても難しいものとなりました。

その中から選ばれた今年のデザインはこちらです！

デザイナー: シン (名古屋国際学園・9年生)

デザイナーよりメッセージをお届けします。

このデザインは、ウォーカソンとイベントが開催される名城公園とのつながりをイメージして制作しました。

第35回という節目を迎えるにあたり、長い年月の積み重ねと、人と人とのつながりを表現したいと考えました。そこで、参加者一人ひとりがこれまでに歩んできた「足跡」をモチーフとして取り入れています。足跡は、イベントの中で刻まれる軌跡や思い出を象徴しています。

さらに、その「足跡」を地域の文化的象徴である「鯱（しゃちほこ）」の形に重ねることで、「動き」と「一体感」を視覚的に表現しました。一つひとつの足跡は個々の参加者を表し、それらが集まることで、「Countless Steps, One Community（無数の一歩、ひとつのコミュニティ）」というスローガンを体現するデザインとなっています。

このTシャツを実際に多くの方が着て歩く姿を見るのを、とても楽しみにしています。「足跡」が集まって「鯱（しゃちほこ）」の形を作る様子は、単なるデザインにとどまらず、このイベントそのものを映し出すものです。参加者一人ひとりの歩みが重なることで、コミュニティとしての一体感が生まれます。

このTシャツを着て公園を歩く光景は、単なる「布の上のアート」を超え、コミュニティ全体が生きた作品のようになる瞬間だと思います。誇りを感じ、仲間の一員であることを実感できる――そんな特別な体験を表現できたこと、そしてこのイベントのエネルギーと一体感をデザインに込められたことを、とても嬉しく思います。

The Chubu Walkathon is seeking Marche Vendors (handicrafts, farm-fresh veggies, baked goods, etc.) to join our community at this always exciting, international festival.

Everyone who participates, from children to the elderly, can contribute to the community by enjoying various attractions and activities throughout the day!

The annual event, celebrating its 35th year, has raised over ￥196 million, and thousands of people participate each year.

The Man Who Does it All

James Hedden is a long-time legend in the Chubu Community who has been involved with the Walkathon since he arrived in the area in the early part of the century. James leads very effectively, but he's not one to merely accept the position and receive the accolades. Rather, you'll find James with his sleeves rolled up, carting supplies, setting up, and taking his shift. And later, he's usually the one to buy the first round!

James has always been very generous with both his time and money as a dedicated volunteer and sponsor. A true leader who leads by example.

When did you start participating?

I first joined the Walkathon in 2005, the year I arrived in Nagoya. Since then, I've participated in all but two events, missing only due to travel or business commitments.

How did you get involved?

When I arrived in Nagoya in 2005, I quickly heard the Walkathon was the event to attend for meeting great people and connecting with the community. Around the same time, I joined the Tokai Japan Canada Society (TJCS) and founded Santa and Friends Nagoya (SFN) . Through both organizations, I participated in the Walkathon and helped bring volunteers to the event each and every year.

Starting in 2012, I began officially helping with and leading game and activity booths in the Kids Zone each year, and have continued in that role for over a decade. Since the establishment of the Chubu Children's Fund (CCF) in 2016, we've continued this tradition with the support of our scholarship recipients, who now help run the booths and interact with all walkathon participants and the community.

Message for future participants:

What started out as "the event to attend", quickly became something I looked forward to every year. It's a great way to give back, meet awesome, like-minded people, and connect with friends you don't regularly get to see.

One of the most rewarding parts has been working with our CCF scholarship recipients - many of whom now volunteer at the event and help run our game booths. Seeing them engage, grow in confidence, and give back is something truly special.

Of course, the Walkathon is much more than just charity . It's fun. From the very spirited walkathon planning meetings, and the early morning setup with coffee and laughs, to the great food/drink and entertainment, and yes, those well-earned after-parties, it's a full day of positive energy.

There's something for everyone: families, kids, volunteers, companies, and longtime friends reconnecting.

It's inspiring to see how this event continues to grow each year, while staying true to its purpose: supporting local causes and building a stronger, more connected community.

A huge thank you to all the organizers, volunteers, and supporters who put so much heart into making this happen. I'm proud to be involved and excited for another great Walkathon this year.

ジェームズ・ヘデン さんは、2000年代のはじめごろに名古屋に来て以来、ウォーカソンに関わってきた中部地区における長年のレジェンドである。

ウォーカソンへの参加歴:

2005年、名古屋に移住した年に初めて参加しました。それ以来、出張や仕事の都合で2回だけ欠席しましたが、それ以外は毎年参加しています。

関わることになったきっかけ:

2005年に名古屋に来た際、ウォーカソンは「素晴らしい人々と出会い、地域とつながるためのイベント」と聞き、すぐに興味を持ちました。同時期に東海日本カナダ協会（TJCS）に参加し、サンタ＆フレンズ名古屋（SFN）を設立しました。この2つの組織を通じて毎年ボランティアとともに中部ウォーカソンに参加し、支援を続けています。

2012年からは、キッズゾーンでのゲーム＆アクティビティブースの運営に正式に携わるようになり、10年以上にわたりその役割を担ってきました。2016年に中部チルドレンズ・ファンド（CCF）を設立して以降は、CCFの奨学生たちがボランティアとしてブース運営に参加し、地域との交流を深めています。

メッセージ:

2005年に名古屋に移住して以来、私は中部ウォーカソンに継続的に参加しています。最初は「とにかく参加すべきイベント」という位置づけでしたが、今では毎年心から楽しみにしている行事の一つです。地域に貢献し、志を同じくする仲間と出会い、普段なかなか会えない友人たちと再会できる貴重な機会でもあります。

これまで、TJCS、SFN、そして現在のCCFを通じてさまざまな形で関わってきました。特に、CCFの奨学生たちと一緒に活動できることは大きな喜びです。彼らが成長し、自信を持ち、今度は自分たちが地域に貢献する姿を見るのは、本当に特別な体験です。

もちろん、中部ウォーカソンはチャリティだけではありません。活気に満ちた運営企画ミーティングにや、イベント当日早朝のコーヒーと笑いに包まれた設営作業、充実したフードやドリンク、多彩なエンターテインメント、そしてお楽しみのアフターパーティーまで、1日を通して、ポジティブなエネルギーがあふれるイベントです。

家族連れや子どもたち、ボランティア、協賛企業関係者、そして久しぶりに再会する仲間たちまで、誰もが心から楽しめる一日となります。

このイベントが毎年成長しながらも、その本来の目的——地域への支援と人々のつながりを深めること——を忘れずに続いていることに、大きな感動と誇りを感じています。

すべての主催者、ボランティア、サポーターの皆さまへ、心より感謝申し上げます。今年も素晴らしいウォーカソンになることを楽しみにしています。

今までボランティアをやった事もなく、また外国の方とコミュニケーションをとった事もない。若い年代から年長者まで幅広い年代と気兼ねなく付き合えることや新しいことを始めようとするにちょうど良い機会だと思います。最初に連絡するのはハードルが高く感じますが、それさえできれば皆優しく受け入れてくれますよ。

Leading the Team at the Reception Desk

Assigned to Reception and Information Desk they do a super job at leading the team of volunteers assigned to reception. In addition to being well organized, they are super "genki" and can always be seen smiling as they lead the team!

I happened to come across the Walkathon event while running in Meijo Park, and I was interested so I contacted the organizers.

Message for future participants:

I had never volunteered before, and I had never communicated with foreigners. I think this is a great opportunity to interact with a wide range of ages, from young to old, without hesitation, and to try something new. It may seem like a big hurdle to contact them at first, but once you do that, everyone is very welcoming.

支援プロジェクト:

知的障害のある家族の「いちご狩り」親子遠足

名古屋手をつなぐ育成会は、普段、家族全員で外出することが難しい障害のあるお子さんを持つご家族のための、「いちご狩り遠足」を主催しました。

いちごを親子で楽しんだり、ゆっくりハウス外を散歩したり。個室での昼食は、大きなエビフライをみんなで囲み、他のお客様を気にせずゆっくりと食事を楽しめました。

参加者の声

「普段、父母だけでは、家族全員で出かけるのは本当に難しく、さらに、兄弟が我慢することが多いんです。今日、みんなで過ごせたことが本当にありがたくて、心から嬉しいです。」

「他の障害のあるご本人や保護者の方々と交流でき、みんなの頑張りをきいて心強く感じました」

この一日は、家族全員で過ごす大切な時間であり、兄弟との絆を深め、互いに励まし合える、障害のあるお子さんを育てるご家族にとって、かけがえのない日となりました。

こうしたイベントがもっと増えて、障害のある方々が気兼ねなく参加できる機会が広がることを願っています。

Project Overview:

Parent & child "Strawberry Picking" excursion for families with children with challenges .

Nagoya Tewo Tsunagu Ikuseikai hosted a strawberry picking excursion for families with children with disabilities who usually find it difficult to go out together.

Parents and children enjoyed strawberries together and took a relaxing walk outside the greenhouses. At lunch, everyone gathered in a private room for a feast of jumbo fried shrimp and enjoyed their meal without worrying about other guests.

Comments from Participants

"Usually, it's really difficult for our entire family to go out, just the parents alone. Moreover, my other children often have to sacrifice and be patient. I'm truly grateful and so happy that we could spend time together as a family today."

"I was able to interact with people in the same situation and was encouraged by everyone's efforts. It made me feel stronger."

This day offered a precious time spent together as a family, deepening the bond between siblings and fostering mutual encouragement. For families raising children with disabilities, it was a priceless day.

We hope that we can create more opportunities like this so that people with disabilities can participate in more activities without any reservations.

On Tuesday, November 12, Nagoya International School (NIS) had the great pleasure to host the Funds Disbursement Ceremony for the 33rd Annual Chubu Walkathon.

We proudly distributed ￥6.5 million to 14 deserving charity organizations in Chubu at the Walkathon Charity Funds Disbursement Ceremony .

And the winner is....!

Created by a Grade 5 student at Nagoya International School , it edged out the other brilliant designs to come up on top! We look forward to everyone at the event wearing his design!

A community collaboration that suits us "to a T"

Every year we pays our money and gets our Walkathon shirts.

Some are worn only that one time and then tossed away, never to be thought of again. However, many are kept. Very likely, more are kept than you think. In fact, one dedicated volunteer has so many that he made a tablecloth out of his Walkathon T-Shirts . (link to Iain blog)

The famous, "Walkathon T-shirt" tradition began in 1995 - the fourth year of the Walkathon. It is always an original design, created by students of Nagoya International School and submitted for consideration at the ACCJ’s annual Walkathon Kick-off Party, where the designs are displayed and voted on by attendees from NIS, the ACCJ, charity representatives, and guests.

Since 2021, the selection has moved on-line to include the broader community.

The winners receive a prize and the honor of having their design used on a t-shirt worn by thousands of people. Over time, through the normal churn of our community, its likely these shirts have found their way to all four corners of the globe, and that is pretty cool.

地域コミュニティとのコラボレーション

中部ウォーカソンのラッフルチケット(抽選券)を購入すると、もれなくもらえる公式Tシャツ。

イベント当日だけ着て捨ててしまう人もいるかもしれません。ところが、皆さんが想像する以上に多くの人々がイベント後も大切に活用しています。

例えば、ウォーカソンTシャツで大きなテーブルクロスが作れてしまうほど、大切に手元に残している熱心なボランティアさんもいます。

中部ウォーカソンが毎年新しいデザインのTシャツ作りを始めたのは、第４回目の1995年からです。それ以来、名古屋国際学園の生徒がTシャツのデザインを担当することが伝統となりました。

毎年素晴らしいデザインが生徒達から寄せられ、ウォーカソンキックオフパーティーやACCJ新年会の宴席で、ACCJメンバー、スポンサーゲストの皆さま、慈善団体関係者、中部ウォーカソン運営委員など多くの人々による投票で優勝デザインを決定していました。

しかし2021年から、選考はオンラインに移行し、世界中の中部ウォーカソン支援者が投票に参加できるようになりました。

優勝した生徒には、ご褒美の賞品が贈られるとともに、何千人もの参加者が着用するその年の中部ウォーカソンの象徴でもあるTシャツに、自分のデザインが採用されるという名誉が与えられます。そして、これらのTシャツは、時を経て、このコミュニティが変化する中で、世界中を旅しているようです。

ヒルトン名古屋様もこの提案に快く応じてくださり、中部ウォーカソンが大切にしている「寄付」の精神を体現する素晴らしいストーリーが始まりました。

1泊は、今回の当選の機会を導いてくれたミッシェルさんに。彼女は、第１回中部ウォーカソンから参加しているボランティアさんです。日本を離れ新たな人生をスタートする予定で、今年が最後のイベント参加になるそうです。

もう1泊は、ロバートさんの友人で、習慣の異なる外国で障害をもつお子さんを育てている二人の母親、メラさんと彼女の友人に贈ります。ロバートさんは、二人にヒルトン名古屋でリラックスしたひとときを過ごして欲しいそうです。

中部ウォーカソンは、ロバートさんの寛大なご提案に感謝するとともに、賞品をご利用になる方々がヒルトン名古屋での宿泊とディナーを楽しまれることを願っています。そして、ロバートさんの願いを叶えるためご協力くださったヒルトン名古屋総支配人スニットさんと彼の素晴らしいチームに心よりお礼を申し上げます。

Hilton Special Ticket Winner!

Celebrating the Winner of the Hilton Nagoya Special Raffle Ticket

This special prize, arranged by our good friends and supporters at the Hilton Nagoya, was won by Mr. Robert Croker. You can see a photo here of Robert accepting the prize from Mr. Sunit Rajan, the General Manager of the Hilton Nagoya.

However, the story does not end there. It was Robert's first time purchasing a Walkathon Raffle Ticket, as he was encouraged by our friend and long-time volunteer, Michelle to support this year's event and buy a ticket. Robert had never won anything in his life, and so when he found himself the winner of this amazing two-night stay at the Hilton Nagoya (with all the treats and extras) for two people, he decided in the spirit of the Chubu Walkathon to donate his prize to some close friends of his that Robert felt deserved this prize more than him.

Sharing the Joy

He asked if he could split the prize and give one night each to his friends and the very nice people at Hilton Nagoya graciously agreed. So, he gave one night to Michelle (pictured here with Robert at the Hilton Nagoya) for her very long contributions to the Walkathon as a volunteer. Michelle has been involved pretty much from the very start of the event 31 years ago. Michelle will be leaving Japan for the next chapter in her life and so will be dearly missed by the Walkathon and everyone involved.

The second night, Robert is giving to two very special Mothers that he knows, Mela and her friend, who both have special needs children and do amazing things looking after their children. Robert thought both could use some relaxing time for a night at the Hilton Nagoya.

The Chubu Walkathon Spirit

The Chubu Walkathon would like to thank Robert for his very generous offer, and we hope those who will use the prize enjoy their night and dinner at the Hilton. And again, we thank Sunit and his amazing team for being so understanding and co-operative in supporting Roberts wishes. 常連さんのジンジャーからイベントへのお誘いメッセージが届きましたのでご紹介します。

「ねぇねぇ、今年の中部ウォーカソンはいつ？連れてってくれるわよね？」

毎年春になるとママにお願いするの。

中部ウォーカソンは、きもちいい5月の日曜日を楽しむのにはぴったりのイベントなのよ。

だって、いつもとは違う場所（正直、近所の匂いにはもう飽きたわ。。。）で、新しいお友達（2本足と4本足の両方）にも出会えるからすっごく楽しいし！

知ってる？この地域にはたくさんの慈善団体が少し不自由な生活を送っている人たちのために活動してるの。

中部ウォーカソンに参加することで、その慈善団体を応援してこの地域がみんなにとって住みやすい街になるように協力できるのよ。

私のお気に入りの団体は、日本介助犬協会。毎年お友達の介助犬と会えるから、これも楽しみなの。

介助犬は子供たちが落としたホットドッグはもちろん食べないし、吠えないし、優雅な身のこなしで素敵なの。

Did you know that the Chubu Walkathon is a pet-friendly event ?

You're doggone right it is!

Let's hear from Ginger...

Hey! Hey! Won't you take me to the Walkathon?

It's the perfect event for us to spend a Sunday together!

There will be lots of fresh spots for us to check out (OK...I confess. I'm tired of smelling the same 'ol neighborhood) and friends to meet... both the 2-legged and 4-legged kinds. It'll be good for both of us, don't you think?

And as an added bonus, we'll be helping to make our Chubu area a great place to live. So many charities are working to make life easier for people that have it a little... 'ruff', so to speak.

My personal favorite is the Japan Service Dog Association. They bring a little cutie along to the event each year... hubba hubba! I promise I won't try to eat any hotdogs that the little kids drop and I won't bark too much. So, what do you say? Me and you at Meijo Park on May 22nd? I am your best friend, after all!

Fido (and Ginger) will need to be on a leash and on his/her best behavior, but if your family includes a dog, why not bring 'em along and enjoy a great day in the fresh air? All while supporting a great cause

中部ウォーカソンといえばまず、この人を紹介しなくてはなりません。

第１回中部ウォーカソン共同主催者、ロバートさん！��

イベントの企画運営、またスポンサーとして、ロバートは常に中部ウォーカソンのキーパーソンとして、今年31回目を迎える中部ウォーカソンを支え続けてきました。

ウォーカソンでの役割: 初代中部ウォーカソン実行委員会委員長、実行委員会メンバー

中部ウォーカソンへの熱い思いと、名古屋国際コミュニティーの歴史について、ロバートさんからのメッセージを紹介します。

第１回中部ウォーカソン共同主催者として、この活動が30年以上も受け継がれ、地元の慈善団体に毎年およそ800万円もの寄付を集めるほど成長するとは想像すらしていませんでした。実を言うと、初めての中部ウォーカソンが成功するなんて全く自信がなかったですから。

初回ウォーカソンの開催を任された当時、私はこのような規模のプロジェクトに携わった経験も無いにもかかわらず、共同主催者のハリー・ヒルさんと私はウォーカソンの開催のみならず、7月4日のアメリカ独立記念日祝賀行事を兼ねたイベントを開催をすることになってしまってね。あまりに盛りだくさんの要素をどうやってうまくまとめて成功させるんだ、と混乱しましたよ。

今でもロッキード・マーチンのオフィスで行われた最初の企画会議のことを鮮明に覚えています。私はこのイベントのスケールがどんどん巨大になっていくのに圧倒され、不安な気持ちを漏らしてしまったのです。

「私たちがやろうとしていることは不可能なんじゃないか？自分はまだ若く、ビジネス経験も豊富ではない。そんな私が、どんどん大規模になっていくイベントを運営できるのだろうか？」

その会議にはロッキード社で役員を務めていたヘンリー・ゴメスさんも参加していました。彼は私の目をまっすぐ見つめ、指をさしてこう言ったのです。

「君、そんな態度では絶対にダメだ。これは必ず開催させる。そして名古屋で過去最高のアメリカ独立記念日祝賀祭になるはずだ。必ず成功させるんだ！」と。

イベント成功の後、私はこの教訓を振り返り、名古屋米国ビジネス協会 (現在の在日米国商工会議所（ACCJ））に所属する価値を改めて実感しました。アメリカのビジネス界とのつながりがなければ、ヘンリーさんのような偉大な人物と出会うことはなかったでしょう。アメリカビジネス界のチャンピオンであるヘンリーが、私にビジネスのアドバイスをしてくれたのです。彼からの教えは私の宝であり、一生忘れることはないでしょう。

Today's Walkathon spotlight is on Mr. Robert Roche.

Robert's involvement in the Chubu Walkathon dates back to the very first event. In fact, he co-founded this (now) annual event back in 1992.

Over the Walkathon's 30 years (and 31 annual events), Robert has never not been involved!

Whether rolling up his sleeves planning & organizing, or generous corporate sponsorship, Robert has been a key player in this iconic event.

Here, in his own words, is an outline of Robert's history with the Chubu Walkathon and the international business community of Nagoya...

As a member of the ABCN Walkathon inaugural committee, I could never have imagined that 30+ years later it would grow to be such a long-term, massive event, nor that it would raise in excess of 8 million yen per year for the benefit of local charities. To be honest, at the time, I had huge doubts that the inaugural event would even get off the ground.

I had never been involved in organizing a project of this scale, but nevertheless, Harry Hill and I found ourselves managing the event, which, incidentally, doubled as a 4th of July celebration. There were many moving parts, I was not completely sure how this was actually going to be pulled off successfully.

I clearly recall one of the first planning meetings that took place in the Lockheed Martin office. Feeling somewhat overwhelmed, I said something that expressed my anxiety over the growing enormity of the event and its huge production scale. At the time, what we were trying to accomplish seemed impossible. I was very young at the time, and did not have extensive business experience. I was feeling insecure about my qualifications to manage such an event and its ever-growing scale. Henry Gomez, who was the director of the FSX project for Lockheed, was in that meeting. He looked me straight in the eye and pointed his finger at me and said, "Boy, there is absolutely no place for that attitude. This will work and it will be a success and it will be the best 4th of July celebration that Nagoya has ever had. We will make this work!"

Following the success of the event, I reflected on the lessons I had learned, and it reinforced the value of my involvement with ACCJ, which was then known as the ABCN in Nagoya. I would have never had access to a guy like Henry if it weren't for this connection with the American business community. Henry was a champion of American industry, and there he was giving me management advice. That kind of advice and mentoring is priceless, and it's a moment I'll never forget.

中部エリアに住む支援を必要とする子ども達や人々を守りたい

私たちが暮らす中部エリアには支援が必要な子ども達や人々がたくさんいます。

中部ウォーカソンはこれまで、地域の慈善団体を通じて様々な支援を行ってきました。例えば、児童養護施設で暮らす子ども達の支援、またその子ども達が明るい未来を選択するための給付型奨学金援助、児童虐待やDVに遭ってしまった子ども達やご家族の安全を守るサポート、難病を抱える子ども達の夢を叶える支援、障がいのある人たちが快適な生活や教育・職業の機会を得るための支援、癌のような病気と闘う人々への支援、子育て支援や介助犬育成などです。皆さまの温かいご支援により、養護施設から大学などに進学ができたお子さま、病気と闘いながら夢を叶えることができた方々、安全な生活の場所を手に入れたご家族、数え切れないほどの笑顔を見ることができました。

中部ウォーカソンは、在日米国商工会議所（ACCJ）と名古屋国際学園（NIS）の子ども達が共催する中部地区最大の国際チャリティーイベントです。今年で31周年を迎えるこのイベントは、地域の外国人コミュニティと日本人コミュニティが共に協力し、継続的に地元の慈善団体を支援することで私たちの生活する地域社会へ貢献することを目的としています。

第31回目の中部ウォーカソンは 2022年5月22日（日）に開催致します。子ども達もご家族も楽しんで頂けるアクティビティなどが盛りだくさんです。ウォーカソンは全ての参加者の皆さまにとって思い出に残る素晴らしい一日となると思います。

Supporting children and others who need our help in Chubu

Here in the Chubu region, many people, including children, are in need of support. For over 30 years, the Chubu Walkathon has been providing support to a variety of local causes including:

children living in orphanages and providing scholarship to those children who aim for their brighter future
shelters for the safety of children and their families who have suffered child abuse or other domestic violence
fulfilling the wishes of children with a critical illness
improving living, educational and workplace for people with disabilities
people fighting illnesses such as cancer
child-rearing support
service dog training

Through the generous support of the Chubu community, we have seen countless smiles from orphaned children who were able to go to university; people who were able to fulfill their dreams while fighting illness; families helped into a safe place to live; and many more.

The Chubu Walkathon, jointly hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) - Chubu Chapter and the Nagoya International School (NIS) , is the largest international charity event in the Chubu region. This annual event, which marks its 31st year, brings together the region's international and Japanese communities in a common cause to support local charitable organizations and give back to this great community in which we all live and work.

The 31st Chubu Walkathon will take place on Sunday, May 22, 2022. The Walkathon offers plenty of activities offering a fun-filled, memorable day for everyone!

100% of ticket sales proceeds, both corporate and individual donations, attendance and activity participation fees on the day, as well as a portion of the proceeds from the purchase of goods and food will be donated to local charities. All of the staff involved are volunteers ensuring that every yen donated makes its way to those who in need.

We have a winner!

After a close vote held online through the official Chubu Walkathon website, we are proud to announce the Walkathon T-shirt Design Contest winner!

Well, actually make that plural since they are a dynamic sister-brother team from Grade 5 and Grade 3 at Nagoya International School ! They captured the community with their colorful "30" in honor of the 30th Anniversary of the event, to be held on May 23rd.

Make no mistake, it was a tough competition this year, but their design was very clever! It depicts all the animals of the zodiac calendar sporting masks(!) with the cow (representing this year) as the prominent character.

You can get your T-shirt by joining the Walkathon on May 23rd or ordering one for a small donation.

誰もが住みやすい地域へ！

中部ウォーカソンは今年30周年を迎えました。30年目の今年、3密や安全性に配慮し、歴史的な時の中でイベント開催を継続していくという課題に直面しています。しかし「地域社会に多大な貢献をしている多くの小さな団体のために寄付を集める」という目標を私たちは決してあきらめない！という決意はますます強固なものとなりました。これらの団体は、児童養護施設で暮らす子どもが明るい未来を選択できるよう奨学金を支給、児童虐待被害者の安全を守る支援、身体的・精神的に障がいのある人たちが快適な生活や教育、職業の機会を得るための支援、そして癌のような病気と闘う人々への支援などを行っています。

毎年多くの人々に支援できることは素晴らしいことですが、支援を必要とする人々の数の増加に追いつくことは課題でもあります。同時に、中部ウォーカーソンの多くの支援者の皆さまが、この世界的なパンデミックの影響を大きく受けていることも認識しています。それでも中部ウォーカソンは、今年、人々の生活にさらに大きな変化をもたらし、これまで以上に多くの人々に笑顔を届けられるよう、皆さまと共に努力することができると信じています。このような困難な時代だからこそ私たちができることは多く、その役割を果たす必要があると考えています。皆さまの可能なかたちでご支援ください。

Your Organization Can Make a Difference!

This year, the Walkathon celebrates 30 illustrious years of giving back to the community we call home. For the 30th Anniversary, we again face the challenge of going on with the event in these unprecedented times of having to social distance and remain safe. But, that has us even more determined to not give up on our goal to raise money for the many small organizations making a huge impact in our community.

These organizations support orphans with scholarships for brighter futures, victims of child abuse to find safety, the physically or emotionally challenged to have comfort, educational, and vocation opportunities, and supporting people coping with illnesses like cancer, among others.

While it is always so rewarding to help so many community members every year, it is a challenge to keep up with the increase in those who need our help. At the same time, we realize that our long-standing and potential new donors are also significantly impacted by the global pandemic. Still, we believe that together, we can strive to make an even more significant difference in people's lives this year and bring smiles to more faces than ever before.

Indeed, not despite, but because of these challenging times , we realize we must dig in and do more. We hope you are with us at any level you can participate.

Distributing ￥6 million to local organizations

On Tuesday, October 27, Nagoya International School (NIS) had the great pleasure to host the Funds Disbursement Ceremony for the 29th Annual Chubu Walkathon. As in the past several years, the Grade 10 Japanese Language and Literature class challenged themselves to organize, host, and emcee the event.

In collaboration with the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) Chubu Chapter and NIS , this year the Walkathon raised ￥6,000,000 yen to distribute among 20 different charitable organizations working in the Chubu region. These small charities do amazingly important work to help make the Nagoya and surrounding areas a wonderful place to live!

Due to strict health and safety protocols, it is unfortunate that we had to limit the number of guests to attend the ceremony. But, the event was live-streamed from the Walkathon Facebook Page. Here is a short clip from the event.

総額600万円を地元団体へ

在日米国商工会議所中部支部と名古屋国際学園共催の中部ウォーカソンは、10 月 27 日（火）第 29 回中部ウォーカソン目録贈呈式を名古屋国際学園にて開催しました。今年も名古屋国際学園で日本語クラスを履修する高校１年生が、贈呈式の計画、主催、そして司会に挑戦しました。

多くの皆さまのご支援ご協力により、今年は中部地区の20の慈善団体に総額600万円の寄付をすることができました。これらの団体は、中部地区を誰もが生活しやすい街にするため多大な貢献をしています。

新型コロナウイルス感染予防対策により、例年のように多くの方にご出席いただくことができず残念でしたが、

The Chubu Walkathon - International Charity Festival has a proud, 29-year tradition of raising money in support of local charities. We are also very proud of the tradition of the Official Walkathon T-Shirt featuring artwork by local students, with the winning design chosen annually in a contest.

Everybody Wins!

The Walkathon is truly the community working as a community for the community. It brings together large corporations, SME's, as well as mom & pops as both sponsors and organizers. It involves a legion of student volunteers. We support local businesses, such as the food vendors, and they support us back. We have showcased local talent, whose participation enhances the draw of the event.

The T-Shirts, usually included with your entry tickets, are a popular item with some people amassing quite a collection . And, though there is no gathering in the park (darn you, COVID-19!), you can still attend the virtual event, and just as importantly...you can still get your 29th Annual Chubu Walkathon T-Shirt.

よりいっそうの支援が必要です

中部ウォーカソン国際チャリティーフェスティバルは、名古屋周辺に暮らす地元を愛する外国人達が、地域になくてはならない活動を続ける多くの素晴らしい慈善団体にスポットライトを当てて支援することで、この活気あるコミュニティに感謝の気持ちをギブバック(還元)する機会です。

The charities need us now, more than ever!

The Chubu Walkathon and International Charity Festival has always been the way Nagoya's foreign population has given back to this vibrant community we love, by highlighting and supporting the great work of deserving local charitable organizations.

Over the past 28 years, we have done just that, but given the growing concerns around COVID-19, the committee has made the difficult decision to change the event this year. The good news is we are reimagining the 29th Annual Walkathon as a virtual event . Our priority of raising money for local charities has not changed. In fact, in light of the current situation, their need has never been greater.

Plans are in the works for this reconfigured event to take place on the original date, May 24, 2020. Please check this website and our social media platforms for announcements regarding this upcoming virtual community event. With your help, we can make the 29th Annual Walkathon every bit as successful for our charities as past events! And fun, too! Stay tuned!

創立50周年! 障がい者がイキイキ笑顔！

食物乾燥機で作る牛タンの皮ジャーキー

障がい者の皆さんが働く場もなく行き場のなかった50年前、社会福祉法人ゆたか福祉会は名古屋市南区に全国初の障がい者が働く共同作業所を開設し、現在では約80の事業所、利用者600人となる大きな組織となりました。

中部ウォーカソンは1996年からゆたか福祉会の皆さんを支援しています。

事業所のひとつ、ふれあい共同作業所では近年ペット事業に参入し、2019年の中部ウォーカソン寄付金により食物乾燥機を購入し、初の自社商品となる「牛タンの皮のジャーキー」の製造をはじめました。これまでの半自主製品に比べ、作業量、利益率、作業に参加できる障がい者の人数や工賃の増加が見込めると期待しています。

製造開始当初、作業に参加する障がい者の皆さんは生々しい牛タンの皮を見て「本当にワンちゃんのおやつになるのかな？」と不安な気持ちを抱えていました。しかし、食物乾燥機にかけることによって牛タンの皮が変化し、「これならおいしそうだからワンちゃんも喜んで食べるよね」と声が上がりました。さらに、そのジャーキーをハサミで切って、グラムを量り、袋詰めし、ふれあいのシ－ルを貼って一つの商品として完成した時の満足気な笑顔はとても素敵です。

A New Food Dehydrator to Produce Beef Tongue Jerky (Doggy Treats)

Fifty years ago, with no place for people with disabilities to work or generally take part in society, Yutaka Welfare Society * was established in Nagoya's Minami Ward, with its first collaborative workshop. Since then, the organization has grown to around 80 branches providing work for 600 special-needs staff.

Chubu Walkathon has been supporting Yutaka Welfare Society since 1996.

How Walkathon Funds Are Utilized

With the Walkathon's donation of ¥200,000 in 2019, the organization purchased a food dehydrator for its Fureai Cooperative Workspace (ふれあい共同作業所) , which was planning to enter the pet-food production market. They have now already begun producing their first pet-food product - Beef Tongue Jerky.

While previously, they could only produce semi-finished goods, with the newly-acquired equipment, they are able to carry production through to the end. This means there is more work available, an increased profit-margin, and ultimately, they can offer work to more people with disabilities.

Before commencing production, the workers were worried when they saw the raw beef tongue and wondered, " Is it really a doggy treat? " However, after going through the new food dehydrator, they found that, " This is delicious, so surely dogs will enjoy it. " In addition to cooking the jerky, workflows for the special needs staff include cutting the jerky, weighing it, and packaging it for sale - including the final " fureai " seal. The workers and indeed the organization are proud of their new line of pet treats.

中高生のための自立支援スキー・スノーボード合宿

南山寮は1886年、日本で7番目に創設された児童養護施設です。

中部ウォーカソンから南山寮への支援は2010年から始まり、2013年からは中高生が参加する自立支援プロジェクトとして、1泊２日スキー・スノーボード合宿の費用をサポートしています。

当初は、職員が子どもたちの成長を願い、自己肯定感の向上を目的とした職員主導の「受け身型」の合宿でしたが、2017年からは参加する中高生たちが合宿の企画段階から関わり、計画を実行していく、「子どもたち主体」の合宿となっています。

夕食後は、３月で高校を卒業し南山寮を巣立つ卒寮生が後輩の子供たちへ向けてアドバイスやメッセージを送り、自立について相互に語り合う特別な時間を設けています。

普段は会話をすることさえない先輩や後輩と語り合い、一緒に行動することで、いつもの生活では体験できない繋がりや学びを得ることができます。

退寮後を見据えて、自立の意識やそのスキルを楽しみながら学び、向上させていく南山寮のスキー・スノーボード合宿は、自立支援プロジェクトとして回を重ねる毎にパワーアップしています！

Jr. & Sr. High School Student, Mountain House (Ski / Snowboard Camp)

Nanzan Ryo, founded 1886, was the 7th orphanage established in Japan.

The Chubu Walkathon began supporting Nanzan Ryo in 2010, and since 2013, support has been specifically channeled towards the costs of their annual Ski & Snowboard Camp for Jr. and Sr. high school students .

Initially, this was a simple, instructor-led camp aimed at fostering the physical and mental development of these youths. However, since 2017 attending junior and senior high-school students have actively participated in the planning and implementation of the 2-day workshop, making the endeavor a youth-centered, independence-building project.

At the end of the first day of the training camp, graduating high-school students, who will also be leaving the orphanage, offer advice and messages to their juniors, and have time to reflect together on their imminent independence.

This experience offers the unique opportunity for juniors and seniors to chat and interact with each other, which is difficult to do in their normal, day-to-day lives.

The Chubu Walkathon is delighted to support this great initiative. We truly appreciate the value that the Ski / Snowboard training camp offers in helping these youths gain independence and develop useful interpersonal and leadership skills.

当日は同学園高校1年日本語クラスの生徒が司会進行を務めました。

生徒たちにとって中部ウォーカソンは、この地域で特別な支援を必要としている人々をサポートする団体について学び、地域社会活動に参加できる素晴らしい機会となっています。

Distributing ￥6 million to local organizations

On Nov 12, 2019, representatives from 18 charitable organizations from the Nagoya/Aichi area visited Nagoya International School (NIS) to receive their donations from the 2019 Walkathon Committee in a ceremony hosted by NIS Grade 10 JNL students.

In collaboration with the American Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ACCJ) Chubu Chapter and the NIS, this year the Walkathon Committee was able to distribute ￥6,000,000 to local organizations in support of their great work.

The Walkathon is a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved in the community and learn more about the many organizations supporting those in need in the Nagoya Region. We sincerely appreciate the work that these organizations do for a wide variety of causes in the region, and for involving students!

空とぶブタやユニコーンのような伝説の生き物の姿を見ることと同じくらい中部ウォーカソンでのアンディーさんの写真は希少。

なぜなら、皆さんが中部ウォーカソンのウェブサイトやフェイスブックで見ている写真はアンディーさんが撮っているから。

プロカメラマンのアンディーさんは、毎年中部ウォーカソンオフィシャルカメラマンとしてボランティア参加しています。

当日のアンディーさんは早朝から始動。朝の設営の風景をカメラに納めながら会場全体を確認し、イベント中は参加する皆さんが楽しんでいる絶好の瞬間を逃すまいと、会場中を休む間もなく飛び回っています。

最高の瞬間を撮るための事前準備としてプランニングミーティングにも参加していますから、イベント開催中どこで何が行われているかは全て把握しています。（流石です！）

更に、イベント後は撮影した膨大な数の写真の編集を行います。（大変な作業です）

Pictured below are three extremely rare items. That's right, even more rare than a unicorn or flying pig is a picture of Andy Boone at the Chubu Walkathon!

You see, Andy Boone is always behind the camera!

Andy has been volunteering his time year after year, lending us his professional talents as the official photographer of the Chubu Walkathon International Charity Festival. The role keeps him very busy on the day, as he always needs to be ready for the next shot to document the program, and he is always watching for the perfect candid moments in order to capture the fun and spirit of the day.

But this isn't a one-day gig for Andy! The role generally requires attending planning meetings, so he knows the program inside and out, and even after the Walkathon is finished, there's still hours and hours of work in sorting, sizing, and editing images.

The Walkathon appreciates Andy's efforts.

An Active Leader

Andy, who makes his living as a professional photographer, is an active committee member and also volunteers his services for many other ACCJ Chubu events, including the annual Champagne Ball & Awards Evening .

In fact, Andy was awarded ACCJ Chubu's Volunteer of the Year Award in 2013 for his undying support of the Walkathon and all of the other events he has supported.

Tanto in charge of Kids Activities

Nao Geisler has been heading up the committee in charge of the Chubu Walkathon Kids' Area for several years.

The Walkathon, being a family-friendly event, is great for children of all ages, with over a dozen activities (games, crafts, and sports) to keep the kids entertained.

Most activities take place in the covered gymnasium outside of the glaring sun, or heaven forbid...rain. That's right, the games go on - rain or shine!

Organizing the Kids Area, and the many volunteers required, is no small task. But Nao is no stranger to leadership. In fact, an active ACCJ Leader, she was awarded ACCJ Chubu Leader of the Year (presented at the annual Champagne Ball & Awards Evening ) in 2017 for her leadership, not only with the Walkathon, but also as chair of ACCJ Chubu's Women in Business Committee .

Ms. Geisler also finds time to run a successful business as owner and Principal of Kakuozan International Preschool .

The Walkathon thanks Nao for many years of dedicated support!

キッズアクティビティ担当

中部ウォーカソンキッズアクティビティを指揮するのはガイスラー七織さん。

家族で一日楽しめるイベント、中部ウォーカソンでは、ゲーム、クラフト、スポーツとさまざまなアクティビティに参加することができ、どの年代のお子さんも大満足で楽しめます。

多くのアクティビティは体育館内の安全な環境のもと催されますので、ギラギラした太陽や急な雨に影響されることなく遊ぶことができます。

お子さんが安全に遊べるよう、キッズアクティビティには多くのボランティアを要するため取りまとめるのは大役です。

この役割を担う七織さんは、中部ウォーカソンでの活躍のみならず、在日米国商工商工会議所中部支部 ウィメンインビジネス委員会 でもリーダーシップを発揮し、2017年には リーダーオブ・ザ・イヤー に

輝いています。

Organizing the Youth Volunteers for a Decade

The Chubu Walkathon would not be possible without a legion of dedicated volunteers. One extremely helpful segment of the community is youth volunteers. Kids, teens, and college students all help out with various tasks to ensure the smooth running of the Walkathon.

Iain Gallacher (the Big Tanto, if you will) and Trent Whalen have been teaming up to organize the youth volunteers for what will be the 10th year at the 28th Walkathon in 2019. Clearly, these two crazy Canadian Maritimers make a great team!

According to Mr. Gallacher,

" I can occasionally be a grumpy bear but Trent knows how to calm the waters and keep things all copacetic. "

But, either way, we are forever grateful to these two gentlemen for their long-time, dedicated effort to the Chubu Walkathon!

学生ボランティアのリーダーとして10年

中部ウォーカソンを開催する上で無くてはならないのが学生ボランティアのチカラ。

毎年多くのお子さん、中高生、大学生が無償ボランティアとしてさまざまな役割を担ってくれています。

その若者達のリーダー役を１０年間担当しているのが、イアン・ギャラガー（担当責任者）とトレント・ウォーレンのカナダ東部沿海州出身の仲良し二人組。

中部ウォーカソンには、2012年から愛知県内や名古屋地区を拠点とするボーイスカウトやガールスカウトの隊員の皆さんがボランティアとして参加しています。

スカウトの皆さんは、スカウト活動に関連するゲームやアクティビティで来場者を楽しませるだけでなく、会場の設営、スポンサーのぼり旗の旗手、インフォメーション係、体育館内の靴の整理係、ゴミ回収エリアの担当など、イベント運営には無くてはならない重要な役割を担ってくれています。　スカウトの皆さんの協力なくして、中部ウォーカソンは開催できない！と言っても過言ではありません！

We like to "Be Prepared" with lots of great volunteers!

The Chubu Walkathon Committee is grateful to these groups of fine young people who have been helping every year at the Walkathon since 2012.

Troops of local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts help with a number of roles from setting up, carrying banners, guiding people and offering information, running games and booths, and even helping clean up!

We couldn't do it without them!

2019 Organizer of Food Vendors

Joe Sichi is a busy guy!

Joe, an ACCJ Member, has worked for the past 20 years as a lecturer with Aichi Prefectural universities. He is also co-owner of The Rock Aussie Sports Bar & Grill , with restaurants in Nagoya and Kobe, as well as co-owner of a local live house - GC Live . But Joe is also extremely involved in the community and volunteers selflessly with a number of worthy causes. He is a founding organizer of Aichi Vision - an annual Charity Film Festival benefiting local children's charities. Joe is very active in local theatre, on stage and off, having filled virtually every possible role, at one time or another, including actor, playwright, director, set-builder, and even corporate sponsor!

And of course Joe has been a Walkathon volunteer since as long as we can remember. At the 2019 Walkathon, Joe is in charge of organizing the food vendors . It's no small task, but it is right up his galley...er..alley as Joe is, himself, a Food Vendor offering up Aussie delights from The Rock !

The Walkathon Mascot is Born!

Joeさんについては一言では語れません。。。

ACCJ会員、愛知県内の大学で20年のキャリアを持つ講師、名古屋と神戸に展開する The Rock Aussie Sports Bar & Grill の共同経営者、地元名古屋のライブハウス GC Live の共同経営者、 Aichi Vision (地元の子供達を支援するための国際的な映画と音楽のチャリティフェスティバル)の創設者であり主催者、地元の劇場では役者、脚本家、監督、舞台セット制作担当さらには出資者としても活躍し...もう多彩すぎます！

もちろん、中部ウォーカソンにもいつからか覚えていないほど前からボランティアとして様々な要役を担当。今年は中部ウォーカソンには無くてはならないフードベンターを取り仕切ります。そう、The Rock は長年中部ウォーカソンのフードベンダーとして参加し、いろいろ知り尽くしているJoeさんだからこそ、この大役はまさに適任！

ステージはスティーブンの手中に

スティーブン・カーターほどボランティア活動に熱心な人はいないでしょう。

「大須の超有名人」スティーブンは、大須商店街連盟公認「大須案内人」として、迷路のような大須商店街で迷える日本人、外国人観光客を長年ガイドし続けています。

また中部ウォーカソンでは、Os u Super Idol Unit「OS☆U」（オーエスユー）との仲介役となり、「OS☆U」の中部ウォーカソンオフィシャルPR大使としての活動全般をサポートしてきました。今年は役割を広げ、ステージ担当として中部ウォーカソンに参加する全てのパフォーマーをリードしていきます。

さらにスティーブンは、在日米国商工会議所中部支部渉外・広報委員会副委員長としても活動しています。

普段のスティーブンは、翻訳、通訳等を手がける有限会社ハイテク情報センター名古屋代表取締役としてと多忙な毎日を送る一方で、大好きな大須商店街を散策する中で発見した日々の楽しい写真をFacebook に投稿しています。

The whole world is (on) his stage!

Stephen Carter is no stranger to the life of an avid volunteer. Stephen, the unofficial Mayor of Osu , is active with the Osu Merchants Association, and volunteers regularly as an official "Osu Guide" - helping visitors (Japanese and foreigners alike) find what they are looking for in the Osu Shopping Arcade's maze of streets.

But, Stephen also has been a long-time volunteer with the Chubu Walkathon.

In recent years, Stephen has been the official go-between for the Walkathon and local idol group OS☆U, who have been gracious enough to support the Walkathon by performing and even helping out on the day.

Stephen is also an active Leader with the ACCJ Chubu Chapter as Vice-Chair of the External Affairs Committee.

When not volunteering, Stephen is busy running a successful translation company as owner of High-Tech Information Center Nagoya (HTICN) , and also finds time to snap pictures of interesting things on his morning walk to work through the Osu Shopping Arcade. If you check out his Facebook page, expect to see lots of cats (the primary denizens of Osu in the morning) as well as pics of his daily meals (an activity he somehow still makes interesting).

Anyone familiar with Stephen's Facebook posts will understand the significance of this photo :-)

It takes a legion of volunteers to carry out the Chubu Walkathon each year!

You can see most of them wearing special colored T-Shirts on site on the day of the Walkathon.

But we also have a team of busy volunteers that start up early in the year, some even year round!

We'd like to introduce Ms. Natalia Oskina .

Natalia designed the 2019 Chubu Walkathon Brochure and Flyer, which is no small task!

Natalia, who is an architect with on2 Architects , graciously designed our 2019 Chubu Walkathon flyer (pictured below) as well as our Corporate Sponsor Brochure. The Walkathon Committee is grateful to Ms. Oskina for her fantastic work and support!

Supporting the People in our Community with 8.25 million yen

Based on the success of the 2017 Chubu Walkathon, and in keeping with this year's theme, " Supporting the People in our Communit y", we will be distributing 6.75 million yen to charities in the Chubu region and 1.5 million yen to the Chubu Children's Fund .

26th Walkathon declared a success

The 2017 Chubu Walkathon was a successful event and we are extremely grateful to all who helped on Sunday, May 22.

昨日5月21日、みな様からのたくさんのご協力のおかげで、今年のウォーカソンも無事大成功に終えることができました。

企業スポンサー様、抽選会景品をご提供いただいたドナー様、ボランティアのみな様、飲食ブース出店者様、バンドの方々、OS☆U、チャリティーの方々、モリコロパークさん、ウォーカソンにご参加いただいた家族のみな様に学生の方々、ラッフルチケットをご購入いただいたすべてのみな様に感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。

Walkie the Walrus is the world's only walking walrus and the Walkathon Mascot

Walkie was born on October 5th, 2013 with a very rare condition that left him unable to swim like other walruses. As his parents cried their eyes out, sure that he would be eaten by a polar bear, Walkie refused to give up, telling his brother:

"If I can't swim, I'll teach myself to walk."

His brother thought it would be impossible, but over the next few months Walkie never gave up. His persistent courage allowed him to become the world’s only walking walrus. As soon as he could he walked south away from the polar bear regions and kept on going.

He arrived at the Chubu Walkathon on May 18th, 2014 and was immediately adopted as the Walkathon Mascot for his walking prowess.

僕の名前はウォーキー(Walkie)、世界でたった一頭の歩くセイウチ(walrus)だよ！

僕、ウォーキー(Walkie)は2013年10月5日、北極で生まれたんだ。でも僕は生まれつき家族や仲間のセイウチ（walrus)みたいに泳ぐことができないんだ。

パパとママは僕が泳げないと分かってからは、「きっと北極グマに食べられてしまう」と思い込んで何日も大泣きして暮らしてたんだ。でも僕は決して諦めなかったよ！

それでお兄ちゃんにこう言ったんだ。

「もし本当に泳げないのなら、歩けるよう特訓するよ！！」

お兄ちゃんはそんなの絶対無理だ！って思ったみたいだけど、僕は何ヶ月も一人で猛特訓したんだ。粘り強く必死に頑張ったよ。そしたら、なんと本当に歩けるようになったんだ。そこで僕は“天敵北極グマ”に食べられないよう、奴らのテリトリーから逃げなくちゃ、と南の方にどんどん、どんどん歩いて行ったんだ。

2014年5月18日も歩いていたら、偶然、中部ウォーカソン(Chubu Walkathon)という何だかとても楽しそうなイベントをやっている会場にたどり着いたよ。はじめはみんな歩く僕を見てとっても驚いていたけど、ウォーカソンマスコット「ウォーキー」として温かく迎え、ずっとかわいがってくれているよ。

Twenty Million Yen Raised for Local Charities

A presentation ceremony was held for the 2016 Chubu Walkathon Charity Fund on October 5, 2016 at Nagoya International School (NIS) as organized by NIS students.

Through the efforts of the International Community and its many local supporters, as well as the 25-25 initiative of the 25th annual Chubu Walkathon, the 2016 Chubu Walkathon was able to donate 10 million yen to 29 local charities and an additional 10 million yen to the Chubu Children's Fund .

Winner of the Kept T-Shirt Competition

This is Iain Gallacher . Iain is originally from the Far East...the far east part of Canada, that is. Iain now lives in Nagoya. He has lived here long enough to have collected enough Walkathon T-Shirts that he could use them as a table cloth.

Iain is one of the Chubu Walkathon's most active volunteers. In fact, he is so good at volunteering that his role on the Walkathon Committee is organizing the volunteers.

What is no longer of use to you, may be of great use to someone else. The Ecology Center ReSoko can help find a new home for your (still good) unwanted items. Make someone happy while doing your bit for the environment, by following the Reduce , Reuse , and Recycle concept!

NPO Chubu Recycle Citizens' Organization will be on-hand at the Chubu Walkathon accepting your donations (of items).

Please consider bringing along any good unwanted items, but please check guideline before donating!

Second Harvest Food Drive at Walkathon

NPO Second Harvest Nagoya will have a booth set up at the 2015 Chubu Walkathon and welcome donations of non-perishable food items. That said, don't feel you have to run out and buy a cart-load of food. Even if you have unopened, non-perishable foods items kicking around the pantry that seemed like a good idea at the time but now you figure you probably won't consume, bring 'em along!

Second Harvest will be collecting:

Rice and Pasta
Freeze Dried Foods
Processed Foods (Canned Goods, etc...)
Instant Foods, Foods in Ready-Made Packs
Gift Sets (Gifts and Souvenirs such as Oseibo, Ochugen, etc...)
Cooking Supplies (Miso, soy sauce, dashi, etc...)
Drinks (Coffee, Tea, Juice etc...)

Important points to check before bring your donation!!

Product has an expiration date that is clearly labeled.
(Your donation must have at least 1 month remaining before the expiration date)
Products from overseas sometimes use manufacturing codes for expiration dates. Unfortunately, we cannot accept these donations.
Product is unopened and the packaging is in good condition.
No glass containers and perishable food.

About Second Harvest Nagoya (2HN)
Local volunteers in Nagoya started "food banking operations" in 2008 and received official legal status in 2009.

In 2014, 2HN received 511 tons foods valued at 300 million yen from 91 companies and delivered to 259 organizations in Chubu.

Second Harvest Food Drive at Walkathon

まだ食べられるのに、食べきれないで家庭に眠っている食品はありませんか？

そんな食べ物が経済的に困っている人々を救います！たった１個でも大丈夫です。

ウォーカソンの会場へ持ち寄りましょう！！

下記のような食品が喜ばれます。

お米、パスタ
インスタントやレトルト食品
コーヒー、お茶などの嗜好品
食用油、醤油、味噌、砂糖などの調味料
缶詰

集める食品の条件

包装や外装が破損していないもの
瓶詰めの食品でないもの
生鮮食品でないもの
未開封のもの
賞味期限が明記されており、またそれが１ヶ月以上先のもの
包装や外装が他のものに移し替えていないもの（お米は除く）

当日集められた食品は、NPO法人セカンドハーベスト名古屋を通じて、中部地区の

様々な理由により経済的に困窮している方々への支援として役立てられます。
